Yesterday I headed out to the chicken house just like I do every morning. A skip in my step, a spring in my heart. Wondering if today the baby chicks will be born, trying to guess how many eggs I can have for breakfast….. but, something was different. A tension in the air that I have never felt before. No chatty hens. No eagerness to descend upon the corn I was throwing in……
Then I saw it:
A cock fight? Hen pecking going on???? What, oh what could it be?!?!?!?!
What had happened to my rooster? My favorite…… Dominick. A handsome and intelligent bird. He went from this proud fellow:
Then I searched……. and sought for number 10. Where could she be? Was there any chance she survived????
My husband will have to remove the remains. I am too sad. How attached I have become to these chickens.
Note to the wild ANIMAL that attacked and killed my bird: If you’re gonna kill it, then at least eat it! Sport killing is not nice. Go get your exercise somewhere else!!!
Grrrrrrrrr.

Oh no!!! I’m so sorry! I think I’d be a basket case if I was in your situation, Diane! I’m just too sensitive to animals! Hope you can keep the rest safe!
Oh no!! I know that happens and it would really bother me even though I admit to hating chickens. Your poor bird really put up a fight!
So sorry lady. Now will you think about a fence for those poor defenseless chickens? Anything with momma and the babies?
They were inside the pen. It was night and something tore a board down…… :O(
So sorry, Diane. My daughter has chickens too. I wonder if the chick lost her life trying to protect the rooster or if the rooster lost his feathers trying to protect the chick. In any case, one died and one lived. Sort of reminds me of the One Who died so I might live.
Looking forward to seeing you today!
I get easily attached to animals too. I say we go on a hunt and grab the guy who took your chicken down. Okay, maybe I’m getting a little too empathetic here.

Oh that is terrible. You must have been mortified to see that! I wonder what happened? I sure do hope that it doesn’t happen again.
Take care and try to have a nice weekend,
Natasha.
PS I have tried to re-size my button but I really have no idea what I’m doing! Thanks for thinking of me though.

Poor Dominic–he was trying to protect his lady no doubt. And I’m so sorry for the death. I feel like crying.
Big hugs to you,
Jen
Oh my goodness, Diane! I’m SO sorry! I hope the rest of your brood is protected and that you suffer no further losses!
That’s awful!
I want to get chickens on our acreage, but my hubby thinks their are too many animals out here to get them…. perhaps he’s right!
Oh, no! I almost started crying. I hate losing my animals or seeing them hurt. Poor little lady…
Try and have a good weekend, okay?
That’s terrible. I am so sorry. My mom was just telling me yesterday that she thinks her dad shot their dog when she was little because he was getting the neighbors chickens. I was feeling all sorry for the dog, but now I see the other side.
How awful!! That is such a shame. I hope that never happens again.
Oh, my! That’s just horrible. I’m sorry.
I’m sorry, Diane. Perhaps you need a dog? A good collie dog would not let anything get at the chickens!
Very sad, and I’m sorry. I saw something similar to this as a young girl, and it was heartbreaking. Chicks and roosters are so lovable.
I am so sorry for this . I grew up in the country and I know how these things can happen.
oh no….how sad…and he was so handsome!
Oh, this makes me sad and mad. I am so sorry for your loss. Will your rooster’s tail feathers regrow?
They should re-grow. I hope so!!!
aw, Diane… so sorry. (((((( hugs)))))
P.S. Thanks for stopping by, and for your kind message
Blessings.
Doris
Oh, it’s upsetting! I’m so sorry.
Pooh on that wild animal.
Awww… I’m so sorry, Diane! As a girl who grew up in the country and saw the demise of more than a few pets, I know what you must be feeling.
Hi Diane -
My condolences. While my pets have been more the domestic variety, I can relate to how attached you were to your chickens.
Years ago, my friend’s son kept rabbits. A raccoon got in and managed to grab a couple. He wasn’t a sport hunter.
Blessings,
Susan
Oh! That is too sad! Sorry you lost your chickens
How sad! I am so sorry, Diane.
That is so sad! I am so very sorry.

Oh – that’s so sad – this pure chicken
Ahhhh… that’s terrible. I am angry and I haven’t even met your chickens and rooster. Wow, that rooster was really fighting, huh? Poor chicken. Sorry.
…that’s just sad
That is very sad. Sorry Diane…
Oh, Diane – I’m so sorry to read your story and learn about the death of your chickens. We would feel the exact same way! My husband wants chickens – SO bad!!
I hope you end up catching the predator soon!
I am soo sorry for your little chickens! i had a little flock of chicken’s back home on the farm growing up and one night a fox got in and i ended up with one chicken, I was so attached to them because they had given me so much, and not just the eggs, they were my babies and helped teach me responsibility.
