A lovely friend, Sara the Twillypop, and I were having a conversation….. who knew how truly wise she was…..?
Me: Ugh, I hate walking on my treadmill (really, any and all exercising).
Sara: But don’t you feel good afterwards?
Me: No. (In my mind NOOOOOOOOOOOO!)
Sara: Well, it’s just something you have to do.
Me: (in my whiniest voice) Well it’s hard, and work and no fun…..
Sara: You have to brush your teeth and do other things you don’t necessarily want to do…..
Me: (scowling)
Sara: There are some things that you just have to accept as part of your life. Once you carve out the time for them, it will become natural and not such a big deal after a while.
Me: (pondering and still scowling….)
Sara: Eventually you’ll be happy and proud of your accomplishment.
Me:
There you have it. For me a huge revelation, as if dropped from the sky. I really have no excuse, other than sheer laziness. My schedule is not overflowing with top secret, life-threatening missions to accomplish. I just didn’t want to use up MY TIME on something like that! Needless to say, I have gotten back on the treadmill and, dare I say it, a sense of pride in myself has come over me. So here I am, sweat literally dripping out of every pour in my body and I am loving tolerating every minute of it.
How about you? Is there something in your life that you reluctantly need to carve out the time for?

Brilliant take on doing what is necessary …. But I’d have been scowling too
Great revelation, Diane! We really do have to carve out time for the things that matter most and make them into a habit.
You go girl!!! You can do it Diane!!! You and Sara are inspiring me to get on my treadmill:)
Sara is a wise woman and a very good friend. You go and give that treadmill a good workout.
I need to get back walking the neighborhood again. Thanks for the reminder.
I love how you termed it wasting time. That’s how I feel, that “unworthy” projects are wasting time better spent elsewhere. lol
Can you read while you walk? It always made me feel like I was still accomplishing something if I got to read while exercising.
You are awesome.
Good for you sweatin’ for backside off. My mom always saved a video or tv show for treadmill time and she said that made it more enjoyable than just staring at a wall.
Dishes. Ugg.
Washing them, I mean!!
Well– I’m sitting here deciding if it is time ot get on my treadmill. Two more minutes…awwwwww.
Diane- I am so you in this conversation, but am proud of you for tolerating the agony!
I hate treadmills as they lead me to wonder where I am in such a hurry to go and how will I know when I’m there?! I much prefer walking outside- oh shucks, we are getting a thunderstorm now… guess I’ll wait til tomorrow.
Sara is wise beyond imagination btw!
Along the same theme – I have a gym membership and I don’t always carve out the time to go out and get there and exercise. I do feel better and accomplished afterwards, but darn it! I can’t always get the motivation to put on gym clothes and actually drive to the gym. It takes time to get there and back and I don’t shower there so I come back home to shower. It is worth it, but I need to make time….
Thanks for the post.
Ummmmm, exercise…….
Laundry. And cleaning the bathrooms. Ugh. Time I’d MUCH rather spend doing almost anything else.
Now, off to find a better attitude…
Good for you! I need to get my fanny in gear and start exercising again. I just let it go right out the window.
Getting outside and into nature more often. With the longer days there’s just no excuse for not finding the time. I always feels so much better when I’ve been outside for the day. – G
I hate the toothbrushing thing. I need to use an electric brush and do all sorts of cleanings in and around the teeth and gums. It takes forever (it seems) and it is so boring. I need to do it every night, though. I’m proud of you for exercising. Just wait till you see all the great results.
I too have to be “helped” onto the exercise wheel…reminded how GOOD it is for my body when my mind is screaming NOOOOO. But it is amazing how we can forget the good in the things we don’t wanna do all while forgetting the bad in the things we DO want to do.
Oh it’s definitely exercise for me too. But I do it. Reluctantly.
Good for you Diane!! I NEED to exercise. I have to make the time. I’m eating way too many cookies
Don’t feel bad, Diane. I’m right there with you. But your friend does have a point, and I’d rather exercise than not eat what I want.
Exercise is mine too. There are so many things that I’d rather be doing but it’s one thing that I really should make the time for.
I covered your recommended nostalgia topic today and linked you! Thanks for the suggestion.
As for exercise, I work mine in during my 15 minute breaks at work. They’ve set up an outdoor walking track, so I go out there and roast!!! Pre-flood, I had an small exercise bike and 5:30 am-6:30 am was my exercise/reading time. I miss it! As soon as we get our house together, I’m going to start my search for a recumbent bike, probably on Craigslist.
Thanks Steph! Have a great weekend :O)
Fun exchange.
Running is something I need to carve out time for, but the little ones and their needs don’t make it easy. I really do not like to run in general, but trail running is fun–though it makes it more difficult to find time to do.
LOL I feel the exact same way about exercise. If you ask me why I exercise…it’s because I want to stay the same size and I like looking good, but I don’t do it just because I enjoy exercising. Same with cleaning…I do it, but not because I enjoy it. Thanks for visiting today!
Yea (I’m scowling too!), I need to exercise on a regular basis. Three times a week at minimum. Gosh, why does Twillypop have to be so smart?
I’ll think of this when I come up with the reasons why I can’t do yoga in the morning then I’ll do it anyway. Thanks!
Oh, and congratulations on getting back on the treadmill. You rock.
I have to disagree a little with this overall theory. On exercise, if you do not like to do it, you probably won’t be able to keep it up for the long term. I hate, loath, despise treadmill and bikes etc in the gym. But I can play volleyball for a couple hours. Or I can hike for a long duration (I know time can be an issue…) But finding what is fun is much more satisfying and you’ll be able to do it for life. Not cause you have too. I think the tooth brushing is only a few minutes a day and the work out is much more of a time commitment. You can force yourself to do the teeth since it’s only for 2 min. But over time you wont want to force yourself into the half hour on the mill. I think you should find what is a fun exercise.
Thanks for the comment Julia!
I don’t mind walking and I do try to read while on the treadmill to take my mind off of it. My absolute favorite would be a yoga/pilates class but to do that 5 times a week would be way too much $$$$. Thanks for your thoughts. :O)
